DACHSHUND means "badger dog".  It's the only breed of dog to hunt both above and below ground.  They like to dig!!

Because of their long narrow build, they are often nicknamed hot dog, wiener dog, or sausage dog.

They are classified by their coats, "smooth", "long-haired" and "wire-haired".

E.B. White wrote:

"Being the owner of a Dachshund, to me a book on dog discipline becomes a volume of inspired humor.  Every sentence is a riot.  Some day, if I ever get a chance, I shall write a book, or warning, on the character and temperament of the Dachshund and why he can't be trained and shouldn't be.  I would rather train a striped zebra to balance an Indian club than induce a Dachshund to heed my slightest command.  When I address Fred, I never have to raise either my voice or my hopes.  He even disobeys me when I instruct him in something he wants to do."

Dachshunds are one of the most popular pets in the United States.

Come visit my shop at to see my new line of hand knit one of a kind original design sweaters for Dachshunds.

  1. Great info. Love the Milne paragraph. He is an exception though. His dachshund couldn't be trained because he was lost in the fantasy land of his owner's stories!

  2. LOL...Oh yes, they are characters & can be quite stubborn, but I sure do luv my Badger dogs! Maybe that is why I have never seen a badger anywhere near my yard! I also have the holes in my flower beds to prove they like to dig.
Thanks for the Blog. I love the new dog on the block. What is his/her name???

  3. Yes, new puppy needs a name.
Very cute blog, very cute doggie, and very pretty sweaters.

  4. What cute pups those doxies are! Lovely sweaters!

  5. She is named Minnie after E.B White's dog. I think that she will be having quite a few adventures....

  6. If my husband and I ever get a dog again, it will be a dachshund. But now EB White's description of their character is scaring me. :O)

  7. beautiful knitting & wonderful info on a terrific dog!

  8. that's wonderful! I love what he said about doxies and your sweaters are gorgeous!!!
